Bulwer-Lytton, Edward George Earle (englisch)

Edward George Earl Lytton Bulwer (1803-1873, from 1843 Bulwer-Lytton), English writer and politician. His works (such as "The Last Days of Pompeii", "Rienzi" and "The Coming Race") ranked as international bestsellers of the nineteenth century. In Germany in the 1830s he was far and above the most translated and the most widely read English novelist. It was only as the 40s approached that Charles Dickens began to surpass him in popularity. Bulwer’s influence on German literature in the 30s and early 40s cannot be overestimated. In the twentieth century the translations by Arno Schmidt - and it is thanks to his efforts that Gutzkow too came to be re-discovered - drew the attention of the German reading public to the works of this author.
